Regular Expressions are the Swiss Army knife for searching through information for certain patterns. They have a wide arsenal of tools, some of which often go undiscovered or underutilized.

Regular expressions can be used with NSPredicate that is part of Core Data, available since Mac OS X 10.4 and officially announced for iPhone OS 3.0. Cocoa's WebView and the equivalent UIWebView in Cocoa Touch both support JavaScript with regular expressions. So there sure is regular expressions available on the platforms, but how do you make it available for your own code?
In this tutorial we will create a PHP URL router. The developer using the router will be able to define these routes with regular expressions, these will then map to a file, class and method which will be called - very similar to Django’s routing. By using regular expressions to define our URLs we get maximum customizability.

Welcome to my new video series, “Regular Expressions for Dummies”. Over the course of ten videos or so, I’m going to teach you how to use regular expressions in your Javascript and PHP applications. As always, I’ll assume you know absolutely zip.
In this tutorial, I will teach you all you need to know to be able to craft powerful time-saving regular expressions. I will start with the most basic concepts, so that you can follow this tutorial even if you know nothing at all about regular expressions yet. But I will not stop there. I will also explain how a regular expression engine works on the inside, and alert you at the consequences. This will help you to understand quickly why a particular regex does not do what you initially expected. It will save you lots of guesswork and head scratching when you need to write more complex regexes.
This quick start will quickly get you up to speed with regular expressions. Obviously, this brief introduction cannot explain everything there is to know about regular expressions. For detailed information, consult the regular expression tutorial. Each topic in the quick start corresponds with a topic in the tutorial, so you can easily go back and forth between the two.
