As a web developer you really have no excuse for not knowing everything there is to know about URLs, there is just not that much to them. But, I have found that even experienced developers often have some glaring holes in their knowledge of URLs. So, I thought I would do a quick tour of everything that every developer should know about URLs. Strap yourself in – this won't take long :).
URL handling is one of the tasks you have to do from time to time in PHP. Sometimes you have to do it because you want to record the referral sites, other times because you want to write your own spider or just because you want to retrieve your current URL.
Twitter’s direct messaging functionality is great. While simple tweeting communicates “just a clever quip,” direct messaging communicates “listen here b*tch, this is important enough that you need to get this message NOW via text message.” Twitter’s API allows you direct message remotely so now you can let your website DM you (and call you a b*tch) any time you want!
One of the best ways to drive traffic to a site is social bookmarking. With social networking and micro blogging becoming more popular, short URLs have become important for anyone trying to describe something in 140 characters or less. When you put short URLS and social bookmarking together, you get a powder keg ready to drive massive amounts of traffic to your link.
Using Python’s pycurl (cURL) and re (Regular Expression) libraries, it’s possible to write a script to check Google rankings for specific domains and search terms.
TinyURL is an awesome service. For those who don’t know what TinyURL is, TinyURL allows you to take a long URL into a short one. Using the PHP and TinyURL API, you can create these tiny URLs on the fly!
